1701 July 24 - Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac and his party of soldiers, fur traders and Native Americans land at "De Troit" -- French for "The Strait" -- later to be called the Village of Detroit. The Iroquois Confederacy adopts official neutrality towards the French and the British.
