2001 October 20 - The Gateway to Freedom at Detroit's Hart Plaza and the Tower of Freedom at Windsor's Civic Esplendide are dedicated. The monuments to the Detroit / Windsor Underground Railroad are considered a single work and thus are the first artwork that spans an international border.

November 6 - Michigan House Majority Leader, Kwame Kilpatrick is elected mayor of Detroit. At 31 years old, he is the youngest ever elected.

 

 

 

2001 September 11 - Terrorist of al-Qaeda attack the United States by hijacking U.S. commercial planes and crashing them into the Pentagon and the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
